Why I Take So Many Pictures of My Kids (And Why You Should Too)

If you ask my kids, they'll probably tell you I have my camera out way too often. And honestly... they're probably right. But here's the thing, I'm not trying to capture perfect moments - I'm trying to hold onto the little ones. The way my youngest daughter laughs so hard she snorts, the missing teeth. The messy hair after a day outside, which is often! The way she still reaches for my hand without thinking, the ENDLESS questions that somehow start before breakfast and don't stop until bedtime. The confidence, the imagination, the sass, the sweetness... all of the things that make her exactly who she is right now.

Because I know this version of her won't last forever.

Childhood Changes Faster Than We Realize

The days can feel long, especially in the middle of busy schedules, school drop-offs, sports, laundry piles, and never-ending to-do lists, but somehow, SOMEHOW, the years fly by.

One day they're asking you to push them on the swings... The next, they're asking for the car keys.

As a photographer and more importantly, as a mom - I've learned that photographs become more valuable with every passing year. They freeze the little details our memories simply can't hold onto forever. The sweet freckles. The gap-toothed smiles. The scraped knees. The tiny hands wrapped around yours. Those ordinary moments eventually become the ones you treasure most.

My Emmersyn

My Emmersyn is an old soul. She's overflowing with love, full of personality and fire, just enough sass to keep us laughing, the quickest wit, the biggest ideas, and about a million questions every single day.

She keeps all of us on our toes.

And while I laugh through most of it now, I already know there will come a day when I'd give anything to hear just one more bedtime question or one more wild story she made up on the spot.

That's why I take the pictures.

Allllll of them. Not because every day is perfect. But because every season deserves to be remembered.

Family Photos Aren't Just for Special Occasions

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that family photos have to be saved for milestones or holidays.

The truth is, your children are changing every single day. You don't need matching outfits, a perfectly clean house, or a special announcement to celebrate.

Sometimes the best reason is simply this:

"This is who we are right now, and I never ever want to forget it."

Whether it's an evening chasing the sunset, exploring your favorite park, or letting the kids run barefoot through a field, those moments tell your family's story better than any perfectly posed portrait ever could.

Your Future Self Will Thank You

Years from now, your kids won't notice whether your hair was perfect or whether someone had a grass stain on their shirt.

They'll see the way you looked at them.

The way you laughed together.

The way you loved them.

Those are the photographs that become family treasures. Those are the images passed down through generations. Those are the memories worth preserving.

So if you're wondering whether it's time to schedule family photos, let this be your sign. - Don't wait for life to slow down.

Don't wait until everyone is "less busy." Cause it won't happen. Don't wait until the kids are older, because you will miss so much of the sweetness.

Document this season exactly as it is. Because one day, these ordinary moments will be the ones you miss the most.

If you're looking for a family photographer in the Tampa Bay area who believes the best photos come from genuine connection, laughter, and letting kids simply be kids, I'd love to help tell your family's story.

Because these moments don't last forever - but the photographs can.

Here's your reminder:

Get in the picture.

Hug your people.

Chase the sunset.

Print the photos.

Repeat.

- Heather
